Humanity

Oh humanity,
what a mystery to me,
from helpless infants,
in our mothers' arms,
we became what might be,
power, intelligence, empathy,
we can hope.
And look around,
men and women
living day by day
ordinary humanity
to the end.
In faith, hope, and some charity,
with family and friends,
in the fire and crackle
of opinions and recipes
shared at the dinner table
and whispered on pillows,
Oh humanity!
What of me?
I too was born
with my brothers and sisters,
held in my mother's arms,
to become what I may be.
What is possible;
I am me.
